on our correspondence, but also to be made into a design to appear over
the door for Unit 22. We are happy to have suggestions, however
sketchy, that we can work on, or conversely a professional layout from
anyone with the talent to do this for us.

Patchings Update

Following up on the news of Colin Joyce winning an award at the 2011
Patchings Open Competition, his painting "Early Morning Light" features
in the September issue of "Leisure Painter" magazine along with the
paintings of the other prizewinners. Colin also comes in for a special
mention in a report on the competition in the same issue.

We are coming up to our 127th AGM, a long time for any organisation to be in business. I took over the Presidency from Jim McLure, a hard act to follow. I have been in public life for nearly fifty years now and can recognise the sterling work Jim put into our Club. On a sad note, four of our members passed away, Enid Bell, Arthina Smart, Nancy Taylor and Frank McCormick. Enid was a lifetime member having been on our committee for over twenty years and serving time as President, Secretary and Exhibition Secretary during that time. Arthina and Nancy were well known to Wednesday Club members in particular and Frank McCormick built up a large following in his drawing classes and outings to places of artistic interest as well as doing excellent work as our Exhibition Secretary and a general “Mr Fixit” around the Club premises.

Nancy Dewar liaised with Dunfermline Building Society in arranging a silent auction of members’ paintings, proceeds to go to the Motor Neurone Disease Society. This was particularly pertinent to our Club since Nancy Taylor passed away in December after suffering this disease so bravely, so we were pleased to learn that a total of £390. 50 had been raised by the sale of ten paintings. Our thanks to Nancy and George Aitken who organised this, and to those people who donated paintings.

Important innovations this year were the Club’s ventures into the Kingsgate Centre. As well as hosting our Exhibitions in June and November, the result of the hard work put in by Jim McLure and his committee in 2009/2010 was the opening of The Gallery in Unit 22. This has proved to be successful both in terms of a permanent display of our work, plus an opportunity to sell our work all year round. It has given the Club a tidy income, much to the delight of our Treasurer! I think the biggest thanks must go to Peter Toogood the shop manager. His organising abilities make the Unit attractive and well run. (Okay, he is a bit of a bully!). He has been ably assisted by a team of duty managers and volunteers.

We still have other exhibition venues at Duloch Centre and the VW dealers at Halbeath and Susan Graham and Maureen Fraser organise the paintings at these sites. Irene Whyte arranges for 2 paintings per month to be hung in the public library and it is thanks to these three members that these venues are kept supplied with a constant supply of paintings, so please remember to put your name on the lists on the notice board if you have paintings you would like to be displayed. Thanks must go to Mary Ramage for the time spent managing our outside venues until the task got too onerous for her this year. Her husband Bill has completed a marathon task putting our Archives onto disc, although there is still more to do and we would be pleased to hear from anyone willing to do some work on this. Elaine Campbell hopes to include some of our records into Dunfermline’s Archives.

The year ahead poses new challenges; many of our committee are retiring and will have to be “beefed up” by equally hard-working members. We also have to consider workshops, demonstrations, visits to galleries and weekly tuition classes. I find that in-house tuition from fellow members were the ones I enjoyed most and there is bound to be another Frank McCormick in our midst to carry on the high quality of tuition he gave us.

Lastly, as many of you will know, I do not intend to put myself forward for the position of President. I feel that the Club needs someone to take the Dunfermline Art Club forward into the new Club year. I feel I am now past my shelf life (getting auld) and our Club would benefit from someone who is up to it. I have enjoyed my short term in office and in representing the friendliest Club I have had the pleasure of being a member of.

Anne Hill reports:
I started the year taking the minutes of the committee meeting at Les’s request when we were left without a secretary at last year’s AGM. Since this is the worst part of the secretary’s task, in my opinion, it seemed logical to take on the easier parts of the post shortly into the life of the new committee. During the year I have enjoyed getting back into the thick of things and have decided to seek re-election at this year’s AGM.

We tried something new this year when I was contacted by Colin Christie who suggested club members might be interested in attending a workshop with him as tutor, under the auspices of the ILA scheme. Two periods of 20-hour courses were arranged using grants of £200 per person from the ILA and these were greatly enjoyed by those who took part. Unfortunately the ILA have now withdrawn from funding arts and crafts, although it is possible we could book Colin for a workshop in the future.

Other workshops have been poorly attended this year, although this seems to be due to the apathy of members who do not read the notice boards unless prompted to do so. Colin Joyce is stepping down as Programme Co-ordinator due to pressure of work and we hope someone will come forward to take on the job of booking visiting tutors and demonstrators.

We have the highest number of members for many years, probably due to having our exhibitions in the Kingsgate and our higher visibility in The Gallery to people who have previously been unaware of Dunfermline Art Club.

Treasurer’s Report:
First of all I have to thank everyone for their commitment and endeavours in making last year very successful, financially.

With two exhibitions and Unit 22 Gallery we have achieved a surplus of over £3,017 this year. This relates to an increase in our income from £9,190 last year to £17,533 this year and expenditure increases from £9,689 last year to £14,515. These changes are basically attributed to the turnover from Unit 22 of £7,681 generated through artwork sales.

The exhibitions held in the Kingsgate also had an increase in turnover of £600 in art and craftwork sold over last year. There should have been a greater increase but unfortunately the November exhibition was affected by the winter weather and the power cut to the Centre itself on the Saturday afternoon when we should have had the most visitors.

Unit 22 has been going from strength to strength and thanks must be given to Peter Toogood and his management team for organising the rotas of club members manning the Gallery and arranging the changeover of paintings.

As we are now a recognised charity there are changes required to our management and administration to meet the legal requirements of OSCR. The major change being that we have to submit an Annual Report on the Business of the Club, Trustees (Office Bearers) and Financial Accounts.
The reason the club changed to a charitable organisation was to achieve the benefits of paying reduced Council Tax for operating Unit 22 in the Kingsgate. If we wish to continue with Unit 22 and retain our charitable status then an amendment may be required to our Constitution at this year’s AGM by the club members.

If it is identified in a club’s Constitution that an Auditor is required, then the accounts have to be reviewed and signed off by a fully qualified Accountant. If the Constitution is amended and agreed by the AGM to change to an Independent Examiner, then the review of the accounts is much less onerous. The size and turnover of the club is also dependent upon whether an Auditor or an Independent Examiner is required.
Changing the Constitution to require an Independent Examiner will mean less cost through not having to go to a Chartered Accountant. A competent Club member who is not a Trustee, or related to a Trustee, could be appointed. There is also an Association of Independent Examiners set up to assist small clubs who only charge a nominal amount for their services. I will be proposing a motion to the AGM to change the Constitution from specified Auditors to an Independent Examiner appointed by the Committee.

This next year may not achieve the same turnover of artwork for members as the last, due to the current economic climate. Consequently the income to the club on commissions may also significantly reduce. Although we have a surplus from this year to support any overhead costs associated with our Exhibitions and Unit 22, a close monitor will be needed to ensure viability.

Finally I would like to thank all who have helped me get to grips with my new role as Treasurer over the last year.

Unit 22 Manager’s Report

The new arrangement to have ten key-holders who work one day a month in the Unit, with one volunteer each shift, is working well and members seem to appreciate getting their duty over in one day.

We are still receiving sales each week although the volume has lessened due to the current economic climate. I have recently signed the lease for another six months, taking us up to September. This is subject to one month’s cancellation on either side but the Kingsgate Management seem to be pleased that our liaison is profitable to them.

My thanks are due to all the people who have helped to get The Gallery project on its feet during the first year and the continuing support I receive from members by their volunteering to do duty in Unit 22.

Dunfermline Building Society Auction

We are pleased to announce an amount of £395 was raised by the silent auction of members' paintings by the Dunfermline Building Society. Thanks to Nancy Dewar and George Aitken this amount will go with other money raised by the Building Society to their current Charity Fund Raising Events in aid of Motor Neurone Disease. Items not sold will be given to Robert Taylor for an event in Charlestown in May, an event in Nancy's name and money raised will also go to the Motor Neurone Charity.

Les Wood has decided to step down as President at this year’s AGM. Nominations for a successor to this post should be made known to a committee member. Please ask the member concerned if he/she is willing to take on the post before nominating them.

Duloch Park

Susan Graham has been contacted by the Duloch Manager, James Dunbar, to say that 'Fife Adult Protection' would like to display their banners for a few weeks in the leisure centre's exhibition space.

She will be taking down the current paintings at the end of April and will be hanging the next lot at the beginning of June. Could members please look out for the list going up at the Club, and add some paintings to it in plenty time for Susan to get them ready to hang.

The Gallery.

Unit 22. Kingsgate.

The unit has been in existence nearly 12 months on a 6 month lease from Kingsgate management, the present lease expires 31 March 2011. We are informed a new lease will be issued for further continuance.

During these last months the unit has remained open 3 days per week, even through the recent inclement weather. This has been achieved due to a stalwart group of members contributing their paintings for display and sale on a regular basis, along with their personal time to staff the unit. Thanks to their efforts, the unit is now a viable proposition, and I hope that this is encouragement for more members to participate.

With the advent of a new lease, it is intended operating the unit using new procedures to reduce our volunteer staffs personal time on duty and all members are requested to read the Club notice boards to keep abreast of any future changes.

Frank McCormick

The death of Frank McCormick was a great blow to the Members of our
Art Club. Frank was he first person I met when I came along to my first
Wednesday Club session, and he gave me a very warm welcome on my first day .
I knew then that I had gained a friend and a mentor in my new hobby.

Like
many of our Cub Members, I looked forward to our Monday drawing
classes, okay he was hard task master, but it was all in the cause of
making me more proficient in my art. Frank`s expertise in organising
and setting up exhibitions gained plaudits for our Club and in between this and his art he was also deeply involved with the running of Unit 22
under Peter Toogood.

I do hope that a part of Frank`s legacy
is that someone within our Club will take on the drawing classes,
outdoor sketching events, and visits to Art Galleries, it is something
he would have wished to continue.

Finally, our thoughts must
go out to his beloved Jean, engaged only a short time before his death,
Jean cared for him until the end, bless you Jean..

Dunfermline Arts and Media is a voluntary networking group, dedicated to the promotion of the arts in Fife, and initiated the "Glen Gates Gallery" that is held the first Saturday of every month at the gates to Pittencrief Park in Dunfermline.

Contemporary Arts in Dunfemline (CAD) is a voluntary orginisation whose aim is to hopefully provide that stepping stone artists need to go onto leading a potential creative career. They are dedicated to bringing Dunfemline a reputation for being a leading provider and a centre for Arts and Crafts that the town deserves.
